Bulgaria in 4 Seasons

Changing Seasons in Bulgaria
28 Oct 2014 | From Marika of Bulgaria
OFFICIAL POSTCROSSING

The postcard showcases the beautiful scenery of Bulgaria as captured in four seasons. Bulgaria has a temperate-continental climate with moderate features which is characteristic for Central Europe. with hot summers, long, cold winters and very distinct seasons. Bulgaria enjoys a temperate climate with hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters, often with heavy snow.

Winter time is characterized by abundant snowfalls. Rainfall is highest in the mountains, and in winter life throughout Bulgaria is sometimes disrupted by heavy snowfalls. When the snow begins to melt and the greenery becomes increasingly visible, it is the first sign that spring is on its way. The smell of freshly cut grass and flowers blossoming on the trees are typical in springtime.

The summer in Bulgaria can get very hot, but can be a nice break from the cold weather of the previous winter. September is perhaps one of the best months to see Bulgaria. The autumn trees are glorious, fruit and vegetables are plentiful, the tourist hordes have returned home, and you can still sunbathe and swim in the Black Sea.

The Thracian Golden Treasure

Panagyurishte Gold Treasure
28 May 2014 | From Katya of Bulgaria
SURPRISE POSTCARD

Katya and I swapped postcard before. She wrote in her first postcard that she will send me another one showing the Treasures of Bulgaria. And so, here is the card :)

The Thracians were a group of Indo-European tribes inhabiting a large area in Central and Southeastern Europe. The Thracians are skillful craftsmen. They made beautifully ornate golden and silver objects such as various kinds of vessels, rhytons, facial masks, pectorals, jewelry, weapons, etc. The Panagyurishte Treasure is one of the important Thracian treasures.

The golden treasures shown in the postcard are objects from the Panagyurishte Gold Treasure, 4th c. BC, discovered in 1949 (nine vessels, 6.164 kg in all). They were discovered by three brothers, Pavel, Petko and Michail Deikov who worked together at the region of “Merul” tile factory near the town of Panagyurishte, Bulgaria. It consists of a phiale, an amphora and seven rhytons.

A quiet leisure activity

Deckchair Canute
23 Apr 2014 | From Diana of Bulgaria
OFFICIAL POSTCROSSING

7th May 1936: Photographer George W. Hales asleep in a deckchair, and unaware of the incoming tide at Barry Island, near Cardiff in Wales

The man in the photograph really seems relaxed and calm, as if without a care with his surroundings. He is just there - resting and quietly enjoying the time and the water in his feet.

North-western Thracian Lowland Folk Ensemble
8 Feb 2014 | From Nevena of Bulgaria
FACEBOOK SWAP

I have been seeing a few copies of this postcard in Facebook Postcrossing for weeks now, and finally I was able to get one thanks to Nevena :)

Bulgarian folk costumes consist of pants, shirts, and vests for men, and dresses and aprons for women. The aprons, dresses, and shirts are usually embroidered in regional colors and folk motifs. Red features heavily in Bulgarian folk dress, but black, green, and white are also a part of traditional clothing from Bulgaria's various regions.

Map of Bulgaria

Map of Bulgaria
21 Nov 2013 | From Nevena of Bulgaria
FACEBOOK SWAP

Bulgaria located in south-eastern Europe, is bordered by Romania, Serbia, Republic of Macedonia, Greece, Turkey and the Black Sea. The largest and capital city of Bulgaria is Sofia. With a territory of 110,994 square kilometres (42,855 sq mi), Bulgaria is Europe's 14th-largest country

A predominantly Slavic-speaking, Orthodox country, Bulgaria was the birthplace of the Cyrillic alphabet, which was created there towards the end of the 9th century AD.

The Bulgars, a Central Asian Turkic tribe, merged with the local Slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Northern Bulgaria attained autonomy in 1878 and all of Bulgaria became independent from the Ottoman Empire in 1908. Having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, Bulgaria fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multiparty election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. The country joined NATO in 2004 and the EU in 2007.

Bulgarian Rock Monasteries
8 Apr 2013 | From Nadezhda of Bulgaria
POSTCROSSING SWAP

There are numerous rock monasteries in Northern Bulgaria, most of which are not functional at the present time, Nadezhda shared.

Many rock monasteries are situated in the picturesque valley of the Roussenski Lom river. Basarbovo Monastery is the only active rock monastery in Bulgaria and the Ivanovo rock monastery, which is about 25 kilometers away from the Basarbovo monastery, is included in the list of World Cultural heritage of UNESCO due to the extraordinary frescoes in the rock church “St. Virgin”.
