A figurative painter India 'Kalpana'

Crucifixion, Jamini Roy
21 Apr 2015 | From Akubi of Hong Kong
POSTCROSSING FRIEND

The exhibition named 'Kalpana - Masterpieces of Indian Figurative Paintings' showcases the 29 works by 14 India's top painters from the last century to celebrate human forms that we see in sculptures, temple walls or paintings. All the works are reprints of original canvases, each of which has been approved by the artists. The paintings, ranging from Jamini Roy (born 1887) to Arpana Caur (born 1954) depict the emergence of Indian art from a colonial hegemony into a new era of artistic freedom.

Perhaps the most striking works in the exhibition are drawn from the life of Christ like 'Crucifixion' and 'Christ with Cross'. In these paintings, the rigid figures, painted in the folk style, have protruding, elliptical eyes that are characteristic of Roy's work.  Crucifixion is painted with similar stoic features with a neat harmony running through. Shri Jamini Roy (April 1887 ~ 24 April 1972) was a indian modern artist from west bengal India. He was honoured with the State award of Padma Bhushan in 1955. He was one of the most famous pupils of Abanindranath Tagore, whose artistic originality and contribution to the emergence of modern art in India remains unquestionable.

The Indian tradition of painting and murals goes back over two thousands years. India also has a vibrant contemporary art movement, which has impacted not only the local art scene but also the global art market.

Santa Monica Church
16 Dec 2014 | From Akshita of India
OFFICIAL POSTCROSSING

This is my second postcard featuring an artwork of Mario de Miranda, India's most popular cartoonist and illustrator. The postcard showcases the Santa Monica Church which is located in Goa, India. Located adjacent to the Chapel of St. Anthony on the Holy Hill or Monte Santo, the Church and the Convent of St. Monica was Goa's only convent for nuns. Construction of this massive nunnery started in 1606 and reached completion in 1627. The Church and the Convent of St Monica is acclaimed as the first nunnery of the East.

The external architecture of the St. Monica church is an amalgamation of the Tuscan, Corinthian and composite styles, while its interior blends the Doric and composite styles.

Art of Mario Miranda

Street in Fontainhas
12 May 2014 | From Madhu of India
FACEBOOK SWAP

I was actually surprised to have found this postcard in my mailbox. I've sent Madhu a postcard October 2013. Having lost contact with her, I initially thought the postcard I sent got lost or the postcard she sent me got lost. As months passed by, I have eventually forgotten about it. Turned out, she did receive my postcard. She was just having problems with the stamps (and time) that caused her to send her postcards late. But now, here is a Mario Miranda postcard from Madhu.

Padma Vibhushan Mario João Carlos do Rosario de Brito Miranda (1926~2011), popularly known as Mario Miranda or Mario de Miranda, is an Indian cartoonist and painter based in Loutolim in the Indian state of Goa.

He is easily the most famous cartoonist of India, and one of India’s and Goa’s most renowned cartoonists.
