Karpathos, 1985

Women of Olympos
24 Nov 2014 | From Milda of Greece
POSTCROSSING FRIEND

Karpathos is the second largest of the Greek Dodecanese islands, in the southeastern Aegean Sea. Because of its remote location, Karpathos has preserved many peculiarities of dress, customs and dialect, the last resembling those of Crete and Cyprus.

The village of Olympos is located in the northern part of the island of Karpathos. It is an isolated village with access from the sea or through a 25km dirt road. It is the last "traditional" village in Greece where the women are still dressed with the traditional dresses.

Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, and the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It was once the center of the Minoan civilization (circa 2700–1420 BC), which is currently regarded as the earliest recorded civilization in Europe.

Crete is among the finest islands in the world and has established itself as one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. It is an island with an exquisite 1,000 kilometer-long coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, mountainscapes, and blessed with glorious beaches along the beautifully blue Mediterranean Sea.

The President's Guard

Evzones
25 Mar 2014 | From Milda of Greece
POSTCROSSING FRIEND

The Evzones, or Evzoni, is the name of several historical elite light infantry and mountain units of the Greek Army. Today, it refers to the members of the Presidential Guard, an elite ceremonial unit that guards the Greek Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Presidential Mansion and the gate of Evzones camp in Athens. The Evzones are also known, colloquially, as Tsoliades.

Milda also shared that their uniform are very precisely made. The skirts, fustanella which is a kilt-like garment, are made with exactly 400 pleats. They represent the 400 years under the Ottoman occupation.

POSTCROSSING FRIEND

Upon learning that I was collecting "A diversity of people" postcards, Milda, a Lithuanian friend from Greece, sent me this beautiful postcard. The postcard showcases the traditional way of baking bread in Greece.

Milda always use such beautiful and interesting stamps. I'm not really a stamp collector, but I really enjoy looking at her stamps :)

POSTCROSSING SWAP

Milda sent me this card as we decided to continue our postcard-swapping.

Most Greek houses were small, with a walled garden or yard in the middle. The house was made of sun-dried mud brick. Mud houses crumbled away in a few years, and had to rebuild. The principal materials of Greek Architecture were wood, used for support and roof beams; unbaked brick for walls; limestone and marbles for columns and walls; terracotta for roof tiles; and metals fro decorative details.

POSTCROSSING SWAP

This is the second postcard Milda sent me for our swap (the first one I received last month). She wrote that this is a typical view of a street in the old parts of Greece. She noted that she fell in love with these styles when she first arrived in Greece.

My first postcard from Greece

View of Santorini Island

POSTCROSSING SWAP

I got this postcard from Milda. We decided to swap two cards.
She's Lithuanian working and living in Greece. She said she's sharing her heart between two countries and people in them: Lithuania and Greece.

Arguably Greece’s most beautiful island, Santorini is a mix of towering cliffs, inky waters and whitewashed villages. Santorini, classically Thera, and officially Thira, is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast of Greece's mainland. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago which bears the same name and is the remnant of a volcanic caldera.
