Sights and scenes: Norway

Norway. Norge
25 Mar, 2014 | From Tonje of Norway
POSTCROSSING SWAP

Sights and scenes from Nordkapp, Midnattsol, Aurlandsfjorden, Brekkesto, Geiranger, Hardanger.

Norway (Norge) is the westernmost, northernmost—and in fact the easternmost—of the three Scandinavian countries. Best known for the complex and deep fjords along its west coast which stretches from the North Sea near Denmark and Scotland into the Arctic Ocean and has borders with Finland, Sweden and the northwestern tip of Russia.

A Shirt and Pen
17 Jan, 2014 | From Erl of Norway

Erl sent me a shirt and pen as a Christmas present. Both the shirt and pen bears Norway's symbols and colors. The package arrived after Christmas, but it's such a pleasant post-Christmas gift :) Thanks, Erl!

The Royal Family of Norway

Norwegian Royal Family
12 Dec, 2013 | From Erl of Norway

The Norwegian Royal Family is the family of the Norwegian monarch. In Norway there is a distinction between the Royal House and the Royal Family. The Royal House includes only the monarch and his or her spouse, the heir apparent and his or her spouse, and the heir apparent's eldest child. The remaining Royal Family includes also all other children, grandchildren, step(grand)children and siblings of the monarch, along with their spouses and widows or widowers.

Beautiful and kind Norway

Kjerag Mountain | Kjeragbolten - Lysefjorden

Ramberg, Lofoten

12 Dec, 2013 | From Erl of Norway

Erl sent me these postcards before, but I really don't mind. I don't mind duplicates at all :) As they always say, it's the thought that counts. And the message written at the back is different anyway. The message is more important than the design :)

And I have to add, Erl uses such beautiful Norweigian stamps. I got a lot of Edvard Munch stamps from him. He is Norwegian painter and printmaker whose intensely evocative treatment of psychological themes built upon some of the main tenets of late 19th-century Symbolism and greatly influenced German Expressionism in the early 20th century. One of his most well-known works is "The Scream" of 1893.

In these postcards, Erl wrote about his job of being a language teachers. He shared that he love his job and that he gets to meet a lot of interesting people. He also wrote that 10 of his 130 students are Filipino.

He also wrote about his concerns about the aftermath of the super-typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan in our country. He extended his prayers, and shared that fund-raising events were held in their country to help the Yolanda victims. Thanks, Norway! :)

Postcards from Svolvær, Lofoten

Svolvær, Lofoten
25 Oct, 2013 | From Erling of Norway

These postcards are from Erl's area in Svolvær, Lofoten.

Lofoten is known for excellent fishing and nature attractions, small villages off the beaten track and whale safaris. It is well known for its natural beauty within Norway.

Svolvær is the administrative centre of Vågan Municipality in Nordland County, Norway. It is located on the island of Austvågøya in the Lofoten archipelago. Svolvær was an important fishing village for a long time, and because of this, it was given town status in 1918. On 1 July 1918, the new town of Svolvær was separated from the municipality of Vågan to become its own municipality.

The Northern Lights

Legend of the Northern Lights
25 Oct, 2013 | From Erling of Norway

Erl shared that Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun are quite special in their country. And many people are fascinated by those two phenomenon. The magical northern lights, or aurora borealis, a spectacular colourful lightshow which dances across the sky. While The Midnight Sun is an unbroken 24-hour period of sunlight that only occurs in Europe in the Arctic Circle in summertime when the conditions are right.

One of the many legends about the Northern Lights is the story of a flock of swans that flew too far north, and were frozen into the ice. Every time the swans beat their wings to try to get free, the Lights came across the sky.

My 200th Postcard

The Northern Lights
18 Sept, 2013 | From Signhild of Norway
OFFICIAL POSTCROSSING

The bright dancing lights of the aurora are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. The lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres. They are known as 'Aurora borealis' in the north and 'Aurora australis' in the south.

Auroral displays appear in many colours although pale green and pink are the most common. Shades of red, yellow, green, blue, and violet have been reported. The lights appear in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, rippling curtains or shooting rays that light up the sky with an eerie glow.

One of the finest beaches in Norway

Ramberg, Lofoten
6 Sept, 2013 | From Erling of Norway
Erl shared that he has been to the Philippines before, and really enjoyed the beaches and the food here. He has been to Davao, some parts of Visayas, Baguio, and Quezon City.
With the card, he showed me one of the finest places in his country. Situated in the most beatiful part of Norway, Lofoten with amazing nature at the end of an 800 m long white sandy beach. In the village of Ramberg, which is situated on the outer coast of the island of Flakstadøya, you will find one of the finest beaches in the Lofoten Islands set in wild mountain secenery.

Reine i Lofoten, Nordland

Norde-Norge: Reine i Lofoten, Nordland
6 Sept, 2013 | From Erling of Norway

Here's another postcard from Erl which arrived today. Erl is from Lofoten, Norway. Lofoten is an archipelago and a traditional district in the county of Nordland, Norway. Though lying within the Arctic Circle, the archipelago experiences one of the world's largest elevated temperature anomalies relative to its high latitude.

My first postcard from Norway

Kjerag Mountain | Kjeragbolten - Lysefjorden
6 Sept, 2013 | From Erling of Norway

This is one of my first postcards from Norway (I received three today). All postcards are from Erl. He sent me an e-mail message a month ago asking if we could be pen-friends - which I happily accepted :)

Kjerag or Kiragg is a Norwegian mountain, located in Lysefjorden, in Forsand municipality, Ryfylke, Rogaland. Its highest point is 1110 m above sea level, but its northern drop to Lysefjorden attracts most visitors. The drop is 984 m (3,228 ft) and it is also the site of Kjeragbolten, a 5 m³ stone located between two rocks.

Kjerag is a popular hiking destination. Some go there because Preikestolen has become too crowded, some to jump onto Kjeragbolten and some BASE jumpers from all over the world go there to jump off the high cliffs. Kjerag is also a popular climbing destination, with many difficult routes going up its steep faces.
