The Singapore Skyline

Overlooking Singapore at night
16 Dec 2014 | From Jonathan of Singapore
OFFICIAL POSTCROSSING

This is my second postcard which features the Singapore Flyer - the world's largest giant observation wheel at 165 meters above the city. It is the height of a 42-storey building and at least 30 metres taller than the famed London Eye.

The Singapore Flyer is the only place to see the breathtaking sights of the country's magnificent cityscape. As the wheel turns, you’ll be treated to a visual 360° feast of iconic and historical landmarks and views from the Marina Bay to the Singapore River, Raffles Place, Merlion Park, Empress Place and the Padang. There is no other place in Singapore that offers these breathtaking, magnificent day and glittering night views.

Singapore, South East Asia's most dynamic city, is rich in contrast and color where you’ll find a harmonious blend of culture, cuisine, arts and architecture. Singapore has grown into a thriving centre of commerce and industry.

A Tuttu Jänis photograph

Carousel provincial party in Kuopio
24 Nov 2014 | From  Maarit of Finland
OFFICIAL POSTCROSSING

This photograph was taken by Tuttu Jänis in 1930 in the city of Kuopio. It is a carousel and not a Ferris wheel, but I thought I'd group it with my Ferris wheels postcard collection anyway. This postcard was from the photo-archives of Kuopio, a city and a municipality located in the region of Northern Savonia, Finland. Maarit bought the card during a visit to a museum.

Tuttu Aaro Rafael Jänis (October 26, 1905 St. Petersburg - 18 February 1980 in Kuopio) is a Finnish photographer. He served as editor-in-chief for Pohjois-Savo Magazine, and also acted as a subscription and advertising photographer, depicting a variety of events, competitions, fairs, buildings, etc.

The stamp shows a Viking, Norse seafarers. This is not the first time that I have received a stamp from Finland similar to this. During that time, I actually thought that the sender decorated the stamp with stickers - adding eyes and lips to form a face of a lady. Now I realize those stickers are indeed part of the stamp. I wonder how many Finnish 'face' stamps are there?

Giant Ferris Wheel

Riesenrad
25 Mar 2014 | From Nikolaus of Austria
POSTCROSSING SWAP

The Wiener Riesenrad (German for "Viennese giant wheel"), or Riesenrad, is a 64.75 metre (212 ft) tall Ferris wheel at the entrance of the Prater amusement park in Leopoldstadt. Constructed in 1897, it was the world's tallest extant Ferris wheel from 1920 until 1985.

A ride on the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel, a landmark visible from afar on the Vienna skyline., is always a must-do while in Vienna. They say that if you haven't once in your lifetime taken a ride on the Giant Ferris Wheel and enjoyed the breathtaking views over the roofs of Vienna, you haven't really been to Vienna at all.

Wicked Wheels

Something wicked this way comes...
18 Mar 2014 | From Cathy of USA
OFFICIAL POSTCROSSING

I was thinking as to why the postcard is titled as such: "Something wicked this way comes..." Then I realized the picture does not actually give a happy-place vibe. Maybe because the place is empty with crows flying, and the hue of the place seems gloomy. But I love the postcard :D Something wicked may really about to happen :)

Ferris wheels and swings

Ferris wheels and swings
17 Jan 2014 | From Iris of Taiwan
OFFICIAL POSTCROSSING

This is the first Ferris wheel card that I received through the official Postcrossing. I like the vintage vibe in the postcard. The color and the movement also adds more character to the postcard. I like the way that even though the Ferris wheel is just in the background, your eyes are fixated into it.

My ferris wheels postcard collection is little by little growing :) I don't know why, but I find ferris wheels rather intresting.

In the postcard you can see the Wiener Riesenrad in the Wurstelprater amusement park. The Prater is a large public park in Vienna's 2nd district. The Wurstelprater amusement park, often simply called "Prater", stands in one corner of the Wiener Prater and includes the Wiener Riesenrad.

The Vienna Prater is in season from March to October. But the world-famous Giant Ferris Wheel and a few other attractions are open all year round.

The Millennium Wheel

The London Eye
21 Nov 2013 | From Karen of Hong Kong
FACEBOOK SWAP | POSTCARD SENT FROM TAIWAN

I have started collecting Ferris Wheel postcards, and this postcard is the first from that collection. I love Ferris Wheels though I never really like riding them. I just love staring at them.

Karen sent me this London Eye postcard while in Taiwan. The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames in London. Also known as the Millennium Wheel,  its official name was originally the British Airways London Eye, then the Merlin Entertainments London Eye, and since January 2011, the EDF Energy London Eye.

It is currently Europe's tallest Ferris wheel, the most popular paid tourist attraction in  the United Kingdom, and has made many appearances in popular culture.
