Tibet is located in the center of China. It is the highest area in the world. Tibet has an altitude of 16,000 feet, and is often referred to as the 'roof of the world'. Tibet is a plateau region in Asia, north-east of the Himalayas, in the People's Republic of China. It is the traditional homeland of the Tibetan people as well as some other ethnic groups such as Monpas, Qiang, and Lhobas, and is now also inhabited by considerable numbers of Han and Hui people.

Tibetan culture is inseparably linked to Tibetan Buddhism. Over the last 1,000 years, Tibet has developed a unique, spiritual and peaceful culture with Buddhism at its heart. Many people’s lives are wholly dedicated to Tibetan Buddhism, which features elaborate rituals and advanced philosophical discussion. he Dalai Lama is the most senior figure in Tibetan Buddhism. The current Dalai Lama, the 14th, is considered to be the reincarnation of Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion.

Tibetans are very conservative in their dress, and though some have taken to wearing Western clothes, traditional styles still abound. Women wear dark-colored wrap dresses over a blouse, and a colorfully striped, woven wool apron signals that she is married. Men and women both wear long sleeves even in the hot summer months.
