Carinthia's newest attraction

Pyramidenkogel
15 Apr 2014 | From Swen of Austria
POSTCROSSING SWAP

Pyramidenkogel is an 851-metre (2,792 ft) high mountain in Carinthia, Austria. A wooden observation platform had been built in 1950, as was a cross to remember the dead of World War I and World War II and "victims of the mountains." The cross was consecrated on 20 August 1950.

The current 54-metre tall observation and broadcasting tower of steel and concrete, the Pyramidenkogel Tower, was built between 1966 and 1968 and is a well-known "futuristic" tourist attraction, according to the Rough Guide to Austria; Lonely Planet calls it "avant-garde." In 2008, the last summer season before rebuilding, the tower welcomed the five-millionth visitor.

Swen also sent a small bookmark and some Euro coins from Austria. 1€ has Wolfgang A. Mozart. 0.10€ has the St. Stephen's Cathedral. 0.05€ has the Alps flowers.

Giant Ferris Wheel

Riesenrad
25 Mar 2014 | From Nikolaus of Austria
POSTCROSSING SWAP

The Wiener Riesenrad (German for "Viennese giant wheel"), or Riesenrad, is a 64.75 metre (212 ft) tall Ferris wheel at the entrance of the Prater amusement park in Leopoldstadt. Constructed in 1897, it was the world's tallest extant Ferris wheel from 1920 until 1985.

A ride on the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel, a landmark visible from afar on the Vienna skyline., is always a must-do while in Vienna. They say that if you haven't once in your lifetime taken a ride on the Giant Ferris Wheel and enjoyed the breathtaking views over the roofs of Vienna, you haven't really been to Vienna at all.

Ferris Wheels are one of Austria's most famous symbols and landmarks. Niki shared that riding these ferris wheels is an unforgettable experience. And most of Vienna's ferris wheels are historic and romantic. They are the perfect place in Vienna for marriage proposals, even having dinner during the ride as Niki shared, or just enjoying the stunning view of Vienna.

Austria's picturesque village

Hallstatt, Austria
3 Dec 2013 | From Niki of Austria
FACEBOOK SWAP

Nestled between the edge of Hallstätter See and the towering Dachstein mountains, Austria’s oldest and possibly most photographed village is something like a mirage in the Salzkammergut Lake Region.

Hallstatt, Upper Austria, is a village in the Salzkammergut, a region in Austria. It is located near the Hallstätter See (a lake). At the 2001 census, it had 946 inhabitants. Alexander Scheutz has been mayor of Hallstatt since 2009.

Hallstatt is known for its production of salt, dating back to prehistoric times, and gave its name to the Hallstatt culture, a culture often linked to Celtic, Proto-Celtic, and pre-Illyrian peoples in Early Iron Age Europe, c.800–450 BC. Some of the earliest archaeological evidence for the Celts was found in Hallstatt.

My second ferris wheel postcard

Ferris Wheel ride in Prater

FACEBOOK SWAP

My ferris wheels postcard collection is little by little growing :) I don't know why, but I find ferris wheels rather intresting.

In the postcard you can see the Wiener Riesenrad in the Wurstelprater amusement park. The Prater is a large public park in Vienna's 2nd district. The Wurstelprater amusement park, often simply called "Prater", stands in one corner of the Wiener Prater and includes the Wiener Riesenrad.

The Vienna Prater is in season from March to October. But the world-famous Giant Ferris Wheel and a few other attractions are open all year round.
