Macau is a very small city located near Hong Kong. You can actually reach Hong Kong within an hour by ferry, or 15 minutes by helicopter. There are two spellings for the city's name: Macau and Macao. The former is Portuguese, and the latter is English.
Macau is a former Portuguese colony. It was administered by Portugal from the mid-16th century until late 1999. Therefore, you can see Macau as a city infused with Portuguese and Chinese cultures. Being Asia's well-known gambling Mecca, it is a place to find the traditional Chinese culture while enjoying the exotic Portuguese buildings. Macau now belongs to China after being Portugal's colony. - Erica
