The bollenhut pompom hat is a symbol of the Black Forest - a great, forested mountain range in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. Red pompoms symbolise that the woman wearing the bollenhut is unmarried, whereas married women wear hats with black pompoms. It has been a traditional costume worn by women in the three neighbouring Black Forest villages of Gutach, Kirnbach (near Wolfach) and Reichenbach (near Hornberg) since around 1750.
